Guitar Legends

guitar legends

Guitar legends of the 50's, 60's, 70's and the 80's are all responsible for the great players of today in one way or another. They have influenced and inspired generations of budding guitarists some of who are out there today entertaining us.

In more modern times, heavy rock and heavy metal surfaced. I personally am not into the 300 mile an hour lead breaks and the funny faces they pull whilst playing them. Don't get me wrong, these guys can play well, but it's not my cup of tea.

I enjoy a good melodic interesting piece that takes me to another place. A bit like looking at a picture and feeling as though you are there.

The guys I have featured are just some of the many guitar legends that have influenced generations, and will continue to do so for years to come. Their music will never die and they will always be a legend to somebody.

I chose these particular players not only for the fact that many people enjoy their music but they are all very different in lots of ways. Their style of playing, their types of music and what they get from their instruments.

Listen to as many different players as you can. You will benefit and will learn something from each and every one of them.

If you want to learn some early rock and roll, listen to Chuck Berry. If it's the blues you want, listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

If the hippie era interests you, let Jimi Hendrix show you the way. How about some slide guitar with Bonny Raitt and some heavier rock stuff with Eddie Van Halen.

Be open minded and learn as much as you can from these professionals !

Over the years I have admired and loved many different artists for one reason or another. Each of them had a little piece of something that I wanted.

I was born in the 60's, so it wasn't until the 70's that I started to be interested in music.

I remember some albums (big, black, flat vinyl things) my parents bought me (and I still have them!) and the music back then was soooooo different to the music of today.

There were bands like The Byrds, The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones and artists like Jimmi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Janice Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, ACDC and the Eurythmics who were all music legends, and most of them still are. (I think because some of them are dead that would explain why they're not still touring..!)

There were so many different styles of music emerging and developing and these guys pioneered a lot of what is emulated today. Mind you there were a lot more artists than the ones I've mentioned here. Those are just some of the ones I remember from my child hood.

I've put together a few pages of information on some different artists that I found inspiration from as I was growing up.

I'll start with Dave Gilmour best know for his time with Pink Floyd. I love the effects and melodies he creates with his guitars. He uses many types of different guitars to get the sounds he wants. His memorable lead break in 'Comfortably Numb' was voted the best lead break of all time. When you listen to it, you would have to agree.

Next up is The Edge from U2. Not only has he and the band been around for years, they're still writing great songs and tour on the odd occasion as well.

I first saw U2 play back in the early 80's on the Eat For Africa concert. They played their song 'Bad' and I fell in love with the guitar parts straight away. I related to the haunting and melodic melodies straight away.
